RE: MDPH Commissioner’s Order Rescinding
Temporary Order Authorizing EMT-Paramedics to
Administer Flu Vaccine
FROM: Abdullah Rehayem, Director
DATE: May 24, 2010
The Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health has issued an Order, as of May 14,
2010, rescinding the special Order he issued in
September 2009 that temporarily allowed an extended
group of health care professionals, such as EMT-Paramedics,
to administer influenza vaccine, both regular and
H1N1. This means that as of May 14, 2010, EMT-Paramedics
in Massachusetts are no longer authorized to
administer flu vaccine, as they were on a temporary
basis. The Commissioner had issued the special
Order back in September 2009, under a provision of
the Drug Control Program’s regulations allowing him
to do so in certain limited circumstances. Because
he has determined those circumstances no longer
exist, he has issued another Order that rescinds, or
repeals, the September 2009 Order.
Please make sure to share this information will all
EMT-Paramedics at once. In addition, please make
sure any training classes or training tools you are
currently providing or using that reference the
authorization of EMT-Paramedics to administer
influenza vaccine are accordingly updated to reflect
the end of this authorization.
Thank you.
